Attempt the following questions prior to class:

1. What is the difference between an atom and an element?

2. What are some of the properties of metal and non- metals?

3. How is the periodic table organised and how many known elements are there?

- Identify elements and their symbol in the periodic table

- the mass number of an atom

Investigate when the first 10 elements in the periodic table were discovered and construct a timeline showing these dates.

Then develop your own element song including the elements symbol, what they are used for and properties of the element.

Hand out a periodic table to each student and play the following Kahoot as a class:

Get students to take time to learn the first 20 elements and their symbols.

Then ask students to make a 3 by 3 grid and write down symbols of their choice while the teacher calls out the element name.

Then ask students to do the same but with the element name while teacher calls out symbol.
