Reason For Learning

Before 1950, plastics were almost unheard of. Natural materials were used instead. Like metals before them, plastics changed technology and the way we build our world. Plastics are everywhere. Most packaging and many fibres are plastic.

Learning Intention

After completing this learning bite you will: Know about organic compounds and the structure and uses of common plastics such as polythene, Nylon, and polystyrene. Understand that polymers are made by linking many monomer units. Recognise the difference between a thermosetting and a thermoplastic polymer. Know the difference between a natural and a synthetic fibre.
