Making the Compound CO2

You will need;

2 test tubes, test tube rack, drinking straw, 1 hole rubber stopper with glass tubing, limewater, marble chips, 2 M HCL, lab coat, safety glasses

Part A; Place 5ml of limewater into a test tube. Place a fresh straw in the test tube and gently blow bubbles through the limewater. Record your observations.

Part B; Add a couple of marble chips to another test tube. Cover with 2cm of HCL

Stopper the tube immediately and pass the rubber tubing into a test tube filled with limewater.

Record what you see happening in both test tubes.

Questions;

What gas do humans breathe out?

What evidence is there that the gases made in Parts A and B are the same?

Is carbon dioxide an element, compound or mixture? Explain

Burn Magnesium ribbon as a demonstration

Discuss the two tasks, talk about the reactants, products, differences b/w elements and compounds

Students should brainstorm ideas that they have developed by doing these experiments.

 

Think, pair share the ideas with the class

Teacher keeps summary of ideas on the board
