- Name the four (4) track and field throwing events you see at competition level?
- Does Australia have anyone compete at Olympic or World level in any of these events?

Athletic throwing events are very technical in execution.  Consistent in each of the throwing events are three critical factors that influence the distance thrown:

  1. Speed of release
  2. Angle of release
  3. Height of release
- Why do you think this is?
- What physical tributes do throwers require?
- What is generally a good angle of release (in degrees)?

Video of the Womens Javelin 2008 Beijing Olympic Final.  Have a look at the throwing techniques between the competitors.  Also, what does the red flag mean?

Video of the 2008 Beijing Olympics Men's Shot Put Final.   Notice that even at this level of competition, throwing styles are still different between competitors.   Why do you think this might be?

Part 1 - Warm Up
'Ball Tag'
Description:
Players who have the ball are it and must try and tag others.  Once tagged with the ball that player becomes 'it' also
Rules:
- Cannot run with the ball
- Cannot throw the ball
- Can create teams and just count points everytime someone is tagged.

Part 2 & 3 - Skill Development/Application
Shot Put
'Standing Throw/Power Position' - stationary throw isolating upper half and concentrating solely on throwing technique
'Glide Step & Throw' - introduce a small shuffle when throwing
'Rotation & Throw' - introduce the spin and release shot put throw

Discus Throw
'Standing Throw' - stationary throw isolating upper half and concentrating solely on throwing technique
'Spin and Release' - introduce the rotational footwork and throw

Javelin Throw -
'Standing Throw' - stationary throw isolating upper half and concentrating solely on throwing technique
'Shuffle Step & Throw' - introduce a small shuffle/run up when throwing
(NB:  javelin head must hit/land the ground 1st to count as a legal throw to be measured)

Modifications:
- Use cones to mark out where students threw their personal best.  Provides a visual incentive when practicing.
- Activities should focus solely on technical development, however to add competitiveness, (if required), students can record the best of 3 throws, furthest throw wins.  Each total can even be added together to see what the total distance was thrown over 3-5 throws.
-  Same activity can be done in teams, collating team scores to see which team wins
