Tactical problem/focus question –

A forward pass or dropping the ball results in the loss of possession during a Touch game

Skill Objectives:

Development of backward passing

Developing passing decision making / positioning

Introductory Game/Game Sense Game

5v5 games, and Umpiring team

-  Ball must be passed backwards or a try is lost

-  Attackers are allowed 6 tries before turnover

-  Attackers can not start play until defenders are onside

-  If the ball is dropped attackers lose two tries

-  The ball must be placed on the spot after a touch

-  At the beginning of a try the ball must be passed

Game Sense Questions:

When is it best to pass?

Where should you be if you don’t have the ball?

Skill/Concept development (drills)

Running and passing drill

In their teams students run in an attacking line while passing the ball between players

Students can improve their skill and confidence in passing to assist their game

Students begin to analyse where they should position themselves when they are off the ball, and develop their different running paces.

Game Sense Questions:

Where should I be positioned?

How can I easily change my position?

Game Play/Play Practice:

Repeat intro game with a focus on when players should pass, and when, how and where to change their position

-  Ball must be passed backwards or a try is lost

-  If the ball is dropped attackers lose two tries

The following rules are changed to:

-  Ball must be passed backward or possession is lost

-  If the ball is dropped possession is lost

Conclusion

Pass only if it is of benefit and safe

When passing, pass backward

When off the ball an attacker should be behind the ball player to allow for a backward pass
