Introduction to analytical techniques activity

Chemists use a range of techniques to find out what compounds are in a sample, and how much of a particular compound there is. In this activity, you will choose from 5 different analytical techniques and communicate your findings with the class.

This will give you a taste of what the different techniques are that you may like to research further for your AOS 2 data analysis task.

 The 5 techniques are:

  • Electrical conductivity
  • Colorimetry
  • Atomic absorption spectroscopy
  • UV-Visible spectroscopy
  • High performance liquid chromatography

Your task—

Put together at least 2 powerpoint slides and a 2 min explanation or recording, which illustrates—

  • What the method detects (what type of molecules, is it qualitative or quantitative?)
  • What real life applications it can be used for
  • Basics of any machinery involved
  • What the data looks like and how this may be interpreted.
