Powerpoint Presentation - The role of Environmental Movements

The Wilderness Society is an organisation that played a detrimental role in the saving of the Franklin River in Tasmania from 1978-1983. From here on, The Wilderness Society has achieved many great environmental feats, connecting humans with environmentalism, influencing relationships.

Lake Pedder

The Lake Pedder Conflict

Lake Pedder, a beauty of the world located in south west Tasmania, an inland glacial lake, was at the forefront of environmental movements in Australia (1967). The Tasmanian government commissioned a Hydro Electric Scheme on the the back of the success that was the Snowy Hydro Scheme. Small conservation groups took action to prevent the flooding of this beauty, yet they were too late, Pedder as it once was, was now gone.

The Franklin River

Saving the Franklin

The Franklin River campaign has changed the nature of environmental movements and shaped human relationships since 1983. In a historic victory for environmentalists, The Wilderness Society pushed the 'No Dams' campaign on a national scale, making the issue a political talking point. The campaign featured many strategies in order to prevent the damming of the Franklin River, in order to establish another Hydro Electric Scheme in south west Tasmania.

"Our vision is to transform Australia into a society that protects, respects and connects with the natural world that sustains us"

The Wilderness Society is the organisation that has shaped environmental movements since the 'Save the Franklin' campaign. It is a not for profit, non-government organisation that is funded on donations and membership. TWS has played a large role in shaping human relationships, instilling a sense of appreciation, connectedness and a shared vision to protect the environment.
