Moviation
Four main groups of motives for participation:
• Competence or Mastery
• Socialisation
• Stimulus avoidance
• Cognitive Reward or intellectual challenge/development/problem solving
Task 1) Make a table in your books for these four areas, and describe then in your own words. Please also include intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.
Some of the reasons why we get students to participate:
• To have a break from regular life, to escape stresses, and to relax
• To socialise with family and friends
• To seek independence or to encourage interdependence
• Appreciate natural environments
• To learn about the environment and create connections.
• To be healthy and fit.
• To learn more about themselves - leadership, possible strengths/weaknesses, etc.
Take 2) Look at the Billabong wedsite "I surf because". Sort or categorise some of the motivations on this site into different groups. Alternatively, do this with another site of your choice - for example Red Bull.
Task 3) Research an advenutre. For example:
- Agnes Milowka, Cave Diver
- Andrew McAuley - the sea-kayaker and adventurer who was lost at sea, almost at the end of his extraordinary crossing of the Tasman
- Joe Simpson – the mountaineer who was left for dead, with the most amazing story of survival. His commentaries are very insightful and a rich source of information.
- Jon Muir, the adventurer who pushed himself to the limits and was interviewed about his solo unsupported walk across Australia.
- Or anyone else you select
All these people have undertaken difficult and challenging expeditions. Describe what motivates each of these people to seek adventure? Do these people inspire you? Or are they just unnecessarily taking extreme risks? How do they manage their risks? Are there similarities in these people and their stories? How do these people relate to nature – are they trying to conquer nature? What do their stories make you feel?
