Environmental Conflicts
During the summer holidays, you are to collect newspaper and magazine articles on 3 environmental conflicts in Australia.
You must include:
- Cattle grazing in the High Country (Alpine National Park)
- Development of more Marine National Parks along the Australian coastline
- One of your choice
Instructions:
These are to be collected in a clear plastic file booklet and added to during the year
- You must highlight or underline important statements/parts of the article
- Make any notes under each article about the cases FOR and AGAINST the conflict and outline IF/HOW the conflict was resolved
- Discuss these issues with your family and friends over the holidays
- Record their thoughts on the conflicts
- This work is to be handed in on the first class in 2014, it will be returned to you so that you can add to the articles during the year.
- Please put your NAME and CLASS on the front of your clear plastic file.
State of the Environment
In a SCRAP BOOK, you are to collect newspaper and magazine articles on each of the following themes as described in the STATE OF THE ENVIRONMENT REPORT. You can include any of the above CURRENT environmental issues (eg the use of National Parks for building private tourist accommodation facilities) as these directly impact on the state of the environment. The themes are:
- Atmosphere
- Land
- Biodiversity
- Coasts and Oceans
- Inland Waters
- Cultural Heritage
- Human Settlement
Instructions:
- Allocate at least 15 pages per Theme above (you will fill them during the year)
- You must have an initial 3 articles per theme
- The articles MUST demonstrate a variety of views/sides + Background knowledge
- These are to be glued onto a scrap book or media file
- You must highlight or underline important statements/parts of the article
- Make any notes under each article about how it relates to the theme
- Discussion of your knowledge with your family and friends is really important for you to develop a logical and clear idea of the current state of each part of the environment
- Record their feelings about these discussions
- This work is to be handed in on the first class in 2014, it will be returned to you so that you can add to the articles during the year.
- Please put your NAME and CLASS on the front of your scrap book/media file

- Newspapers – Age, Australian, Herald/Sun, Local (Melbourne Times + Leader)
