1. Serial Podcast

In 1999 a 17 year old boy, who claims he is innocent, was sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering his girlfriend. This podcast explores aspects of the investigation and the trial that were handled incorrectly, and raises questions about whether the boy is actually innocent.

Click below and follow the links to listen to the first episode of this podcast, and think about the questions below. Download it on your phone and you can listen while you complete other tasks like driving or exercising.

 

- Can we ever be 100% certain that someone has committed a crime?

- What do you think the consequences of putting an innocent person in prison might be for that individual and for society?

- How do criminal Trials find the truth in cases where a serious crime has been committed?

2. Study Design

Read through Unit 3 of the Study Design (attached below go to page 21) to get familiar with what we will be learning.

Create a checklist of the Key Knowledge dot points so that you can tick them off as you learn them.

3. Summaries

Read Chapters 1.1-1.3 of the textbook (scanned copy below) and take notes on the key points.

Create a glossary of definitions for the following terms:

Parliament

Bicameral

House of Representatives

Senate

Crown

4. Law in the Media

Bring an article to class that involves a legal issue (could be about a crime that has been committed, a new law, or a court case). Be prepared to discuss your article with the class.
