In order to prepare yourself for the topics we will cover in Unit 3, you will need to have a good grasp of the concepts listed below (Note that if you have done General Mathematics Units 1 & 2, you will have covered these already - maybe go back and review them? - if not there is always google/wikipedia wink ):

Univariate Data:

  • types of data - categorical, numerical, discrete, continuous
  • representation of data - stem and leaf plots, box plots, dot plots, histograms
  • descriptive statistics - mean, mode, median, range, standard deviation

Bivariate Data:

  • correlation
  • linear functions
  • linear regression

You will need to familiarise your self with the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) "Study Design" for Further Mathematics Units 3 & 4, which you can find here.

Please read this document in its entirety - it is the basis of what will be in the final VCE exams.  Take note of how the course is assessed, e.g. how the final marks are allocated for each of the four SACs and the two final exams.

You will ALSO need to familiarise yourself with the Subject Learning Guide (which you can find here) that describes the course, and includes a week-by-week plan of the subject.

Please note, there is more work at the bottom of this page.

The following link is to work for the Holiday Task.  Please read it thoroughly, as it contains instruction on what is required.

NOTE: you will need to purchase a text book (see the reading list for FM34, here), and a CAS calculator.  The sooner you do this, the better.

NOTE: it is the expectation of the Mathematics Teaching Staff @TC that you arrive at the 1st lesson of FM34 in 2015 with your BYOD device (or netbook), your text book, your CAS calculator, and all necessary exercise/work books and writing materials.
