Structure of the novel :
Exposition
The exposition is the portion of a story that introduces important background information to the audience; for example, information about the setting, events occurring before the main plot, characters' back stories, etc.Exposition can be conveyed through dialogues, flashbacks, character's thoughts etc.
Conflict
1. List all the 'problems' at the start of the novel and those introduced later in the novel.
How many can you remember?
Work with peers to share ideas.
Consult your notes if you have difficulty.
2. Order them in importance from 1 - 10 (or more) with 10 being the least important conflict or problem and 1 being the most important. Provide your reasons.
3. Share with the class and see if you agree.
Resolution
1. How are problems and conflicts resolved by the end of the novel?
2. Is the novel open-ended? This means that there is not a clear answer to all conflicts that the author Robert Newton created.
3. What did you think of the way the author resolved problems, issues and conflicts?
4. Was the ending satisfying?
