Ambigrams are words that are written in such a way that you can rotate them and they look the same. The document below contains a number of ambigram artworks created by John Langdon. Use these (or similar ambigrams you see online) as inspiration as you create your own ambigram.

You are to pick a word (or a collection of words) and create an ambigram with them. Some ideas you could draw from include:

  • your name
  • your favorite hobby
  • your favorite word
  • a topic you study at school
  • a place you have visited

Hint: Shorter words are often easier to turn into ambigrams than longer words!

You should start by doing rough drafts/sketches in your workbook and then a final good copy on grid paper which your teacher will provide.

Once you have a basic version of your ambigram try to add any extra embellishments or additions that might make it more aesthetically pleasing or interesting to look at.

If you finish this or want an extra chellenge you should try to create an ambigram that has a higher degree of rotational symmetry than 2 (just turning 180 degrees).
