CREATIVE WRITING AND SLANG.
In this activity you will need to consider some of the slang used by the author Robert Newton to show how Frankie spoke at this time.
We don't hear the conversation between Frankie and Hardcastle in chapter 13.
All we read is the following as Frankie enters Mr Hardcastle's room to get the strap :
'For some reason, as I stepped into that tiny room, I went back to the night I'd spent with Mickey. I remember how useless I felt as I sat there listening to the horrible whimpering noises coming from the dunny next door. But now, as I closed the door I knew exactly what I had to do'. p108
TASK 1
Notice that these are Frankie's thoughts - now write a scene that shows the conversation Frankie had with Hardcastle that stopped him from ever hitting the boys again.
Create the conversation in which Frankie tells Hardcastle what he knows.
What is Hardcastle like when Frankie enters the room?
What does he say to Frankie?
What does Frankie say to Hardcastle?
For ideas on how to set this out, see example in resources BELOW.
Separate each character's dialogue with a space or line so the reader knows who is speaking more easily and clearly.
Use the student sample but do NOT copy it.
Read through the novel for examples of Frankie's slang :
examples :
Jaysus for Jesus
Ya for you
Talkin' instead of talking (the 'g' is dropped from words that end in 'ing')
Dunny - toilet
Ain't for isn't
How many can you find?

TASK 2
Write some examples of slang that you use today - make sure these are examples that are not offensive.
