The Camp.

Breaking down the barriers : The importance of Coach Boone's actions.

Coach Boone makes the white team and the black team change buses so they are sitting next to each other :

'You and you, offensive bus.

Sit together.

You and you, defensive bus.

Sit together'.

Get comfortable, too, because the person that I have you sitting next to is the same one

you'll be rooming with'.

Q Why does he do this?

Louie Lastik

Q Why does he sit with the African Americans?

Consider his words when he sits at Julius' table :

'Man, I don't have any people.

I'm with everybody, Julius'.

Q How does Coach Boone help Louie regarding his college scores?

Gerry and Julius

Q Is it important to unite these two key players? Why?

Julius and Gerry :  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guA_4AzXqh0

Julius - Captain's supposed to be the leader, right?

Gerry -Right.

Julius - You got a job? You been doing your job?

Gerry - I've been doing my job.

Julius - Then why don't you tell your white buddies

to block for Rev better? 'Cause they have not blocked for him worth a plugged nickel,

and you know it!

Discussion - the conflict between the two 'leaders' shows us that both need to accept each other.

Gerry is angry at Julius' selfishness :

Gerry - That's the worst attitude I ever heard.

Julius - Attitude reflects leadership, Captain.

Q What does Julius expect from Gerry?

Student activity Themes - leadership and unity.

The theme of leadership is very strong in this film - discuss and write ideas about what qualities a good leader should have.
