When we have a shower in a cold bathroom, hot water from the shower evaporates to become steam.  When the hot steam comes in contact with the cold mirror, the steam cools and condenses back into liquid water.

The process of distillation involves evaporation and condensation, however the purpose of distillation is to collect the pure liquid after it has been evaporated and condensed.

Distillation is one way that we can purify water.  Can you think of other ways that we can turn water that is undrinkable, into drinkable water?  Make a list of as many as you can think of.

Crude oil collected from deep below the Earth is put through a complex process of distillation.  Many components from the crude oil are evaporated off and then collected.  Each component that is evaporated off has a different boiling point.

Research crude oil distillation and find out more about the industrial process needed to make petrol and many other products.

Watch this short clip below which will show you an efficient way of distilling water from a copper sulphate solution.

The technique we will use in the lab will be much simpler.

Make sure you are clear about what happens to the water and what happens to the copper sulphate.
