Crystals can be grown at home using salt or sugar (see the link below).

"Alum" is a compound, which is a mixture of more than one type of atom.  Alum is chemically known as potassium aluminium sulfate.

Alum is in a crystal lattice formation, which becomes visible over time as the crystal grows.  Table salt and beach sand are two common examples of compound lattices.
