How is a hypothesis different from a guess?

This learning bite is all about testing hypotheses. To find out more about what a hypothesis is, click the link below.

If you are doing this learning bite at home, you can still run a small experiment using things from around your house. You could even complete the experiment about rockets listed in the class activities below. Just ask your teacher about what limitations he/she has set for the experiment. Otherwise, you could design your own experiment. remember that the point of the lesson is to try to PREDICT what will happen - but it must be a reasonable prediction, not just a guess.

The website in the link above has some ideas in it if you are stuck looking for something to investigate.

Good luck!

Why Does Alka-Seltzer Fizz?

Watch the following video prior to class to assist in your understanding of Alka-Seltzer tablets.

Prior to class:

Read the experiment outline and begin to think about ways in which you could modify your rocket.

Write a hypothesis predicting what the effect of more/less reactants will do to the "pop height" and "pop time" of the rocket.

Your task is to create an Alka Seltzer Rocket using the method described in the prac outline below. HOWEVER..... your resulting pop-rocket lid must adhere to the limitations given by your teacher. In this way, you will need to experiment with the heights at which the lids come off and/or the time it lifts off compared with the amount of reactants used in order to meet the brief.

Good luck!
