Bunsen burners are a common article that you would find in a science lab, but who came up with the idea to make them?  The below clip will give you information about the history of the Bunsen burner.

Practical exercises:

1. Light a Bunsen burner, following all correct steps and safety procedures.

2. Go to the attached link and complete part A of the second practical activity ("Hot or Cool?")

3. Turn the gauze mat so that it is horizontal. Place it over the (blue) flame just at the very top of the barrel. Slowly move the mat upwards noting how the colour and shape of the heat spot changes on the gauze mat.

4. From this activity, write a conclusion about which part of the flame was the hottest and what evidence there was for this conclusion.
