Defensive strategies

 

Tactical problem/focus question – Making the most of your defence through positioning and interception

 

Skill Objectives:

Positioning in defence

Interception as a means of defence

 

Introductory Game/Game Sense Game

5v5 game, full rules, modified field, umpire team

Students participate with a focus of the previous defensive strategies lesson on positioning in the defence line, different approaches to making a touch and performing the onside rule with pace.

Game Sense Questions:

Thinking outside the boundaries of the rules, what other methods are there to stop the attack or influence a changeover?

Where are the weaknesses in the attacking line

 

Skill/Concept development (drills)

Keepies off

In teams, a modified appropriate area

Teams play keepies off with 3 attackers and 2 defenders

The defenders work through positioning, and together to intercept the ball and gain possession.

Game Sense Questions:

When is the best opportunity to intercept?

How can we influence and pressure the attackers to form weaknesses in their positioning?

 

Game Play/Play Practice

 

Repeat of the introductory game

Students keep a focus on where there may be weaknesses within the attackers line

Students place focus on reading and anticipating the play

How they can influence the movements of the attacker through their own

Conclusion

 

Through good decision making defenders can influence the game play

Where should you be positioned?

Where are there opportunities for different defensive methods?

 

 

Attacking as a team

Tactical problem/focus question – Working together as a team to create a functional and effective offence.

 

Skill Objectives:

Move quickly to support the ball carrier

Signal or call for the ball

Communicate with all team members

Introductory Game/Game Sense Game

5v5 game, full rules, modified field, umpire team

Game Sense Questions:

Where could you be providing more support?
Should you be moving to a different position?

Does you team mate know where you are?

How can you support your team better?

Continue introduction game

5v5 game, full rules, modified field, umpire team

Students must communicate and call for the ball or they lose a try

Students have 5 seconds to reposition and perform a roll ball or they lose a try

Game Sense Questions:

How can you better support the ball player?

When should you be communicating?

Game Play/Play Practice:

Continue introduction game

Students focus on working together to support the ball player, and identify weak areas in their offensive line
