What is Netball?

An international sport, played by 2 teams of 7 players, based on throwing and catching.

The object is to score goals from inside the goal area by throwing a ball into a ring attached to a high post.

Each goal is worth one point and the winning team is the one with the most points at the end of play.

A game of netball usually consists of four periods of 15 minutes (for adults) or 10 minutes (for juniors).

Teams change ends after each period of play.

Netball positions are: Goal Shooter, Goal Keeper, Goal Attack, Goal Defence, Wing Attack, Wing Defence and Centre.

Part 1 - Warm Up
'Passing in pairs'
In pairs students need to practice a chest pass, overhead pass, bounce pass, one armed pass and fake pass
Extension: two groups of pairs join together and play keepings off

Part 2 - Skill Progression/Development
'Pass and Go'
- Students will be in groups of 8 with 3 defenders and 5 attackers
- When an attacker successfully passes a ball to another attacker they need to run to the sideline
- If the defender intercepts and gets the ball they then become the attackers

'Touch Netball'
- Students are split up into three teams
- Two teams play and one team is on the side line (rotated through)
- Students need to pass the ball between themselves and score a try (similar to rugby)
- Students need to make at least 3 passes before they score
- Netball rules apply

Part 3 - Skill Application
'Corner Netball'
- Students are in same teams from previous game
- Each team chooses two players to stand in the hoop where they can score if they get the ball
- Students play using netball rules and need to make 3 passes before they can score
