1. Watch YouTube Video (see attcahed) and discuss. Encourage students to take notes. Discuss with students beforehand about key aspects of China in this period (Kuomintang, Communists, Civil War, Mao etc). Afterwards, students are to write a quick paragraph in paris that explains the basics of what has happened in China during this period. This information can be reinforced in point 2 below.

2. Access the BBC webpage (attached) relating to the 1949 Communist Revolution and answer the following questions:

  • Who was Chiang Kai Shek? ?
  • What was the Kuomintang? What did they stand for?
  • What happened to Chinag Kai Shek and the Kuomontang as a result of the 1949 Revolution?
  • Who was Mao Zedong?
  • Who were the Communists? What did they stand for?
  • What was the Long March? What was its significance?

3. Analyse the quote from Mao Zedong (attached). The answer the following questions:

  • What did Mao hope to achieve from the Revolution of 1949?
  • Who were the two classes that the revolution considered to be most important? Why?
