1. Watch You Tube Clip (see attached) explaining the cause of The Opium War between Britain and China in 1840. Then, as a class, discuss key points based on the following questions:

  • What was the cause of The First Opium War?
  • What's opium used for?
  • Why didn't the Chinese want it?
  • WHy did the British want to sell it to China?
  • What was the effect of the War on China and its people (including the resulting rules and regulations imposed on them?

2. Source Analysis: Read each of the primary/secondary sources to gain a further understanding of the Opium War and the years leading up to it (See attached for sources). After reading each source answer the following questions:

  • What is the content of the source?
  • What does it tell you about both China and Britain from this period?

3. Write a short diary entry from the perspective of William Jardine (Co-founder of Jardine, Matheson and Company) or Emperor Daoguang in 1939 in regards to the illegal smuggling of opium into China (your teacher will split the class up into two groups). Use the sources to inform your writing, and make sure that they are factually and contextually correct.
