Before we continue with persuasive techniques, let's revise how we find the main contentions of newspaper articles (opinion pieces in particular).

  • As a class, brainstorm a list of all the things you’ve seen in the news this week.
  • In groups of three or four, choose an issue and find as many articles as you can on it, including opinion pieces, editorials and feature articles.
  • Put together a poster on your issue. Include a brief overview of the issue eg. If it’s about sending troops to Iraq, give a brief history of Australia’s involvement in the Iraq war.
  • Use three articles (minimum) and next to the article state the contention, tone and intended audience. You don’t have to include the whole article, just the headline and an image will do.
At the end, groups will present their 'issues' posters and discuss the different points of view of the articles they've found.

Discuss other techniques used in the article and their effect on reader. As a class create a table with technique, example, effect on board for students to fill in details, ready to construct a body paragraph in the next bite.
