Comparison of texts. Theme - Survival

In order to complete a comparative essay you must first compare the texts.

This will be done in class but you may use the following guidelines and you will rely on the notes you took as you viewed the film.

- What is different about the setting of both texts?

- What is different about the challenges that the setting, both political and physical, pose for the main characters?

- What is different about the timeline of both texts and why is this significant regarding the theme of survival?

- What other diffferences exist that you consider significant? Think about the goals of the main characters and how these are achieved.

Similarities

- What do Li and Joe share in common? Consider their will to survive and/or other factors.

- To what extent is resilience a common factor in their lives? Provide examples of this and HOW this is shown in both films.

- What is/are their most desperate moment/s? Consider how this/these is shown in the film.

- What is/are their most triumphant moment/s?

- When does each character rely on the assistance of others? There might be more than one example.

- When does each character have to rely on their own inner strength without the assitance of others?

The genre

- Both films are biographical in nature. Consider how this adds to the power of each film text in conveying the experiences of each protagonist.

(Remember, both men are still alive)
