Set up a table in workbook or on netbook with three colums for Emotional, Physical and Social Survival and space to record examples of each from the film.

Watch the film, stopping at points that show examples of survival and completing your table.

If at any point in the film an example comes up that compares with something you have experienced, record your thoughts on this below your table.

After watching the first half of the film, add a couple of sentences below your table explaining what you believe the film is saying about survival overall.

Set up a table on board with sections for Emotional Survival, Physical and Social Survival and space to record examples from film under each heading.

Continue (or start) watching Mao's Last Dancer, stopping to record examples for each section above.

When stopping the film to record examples, where possible, ask students what they would have done in the same situations Li faces or whether they have ever experienced a similar situation.
Stop the film before the end of the class to discuss the most significant examples of the different types of the survival and what the film says, so far, about survival overall.
