1. Recap what is known about the Revolution of 1949 from the previous lesson with the class.
2. Analyse the "Great Leap Forward" article from the BBC website (attached) and answer the following questions:
- What was the Great Leap Forward?
- What did Mao Zedong hope to achieve?
- Was this plan a success? Why? Why not?
Then, in groups of 4, students are to discuss there answers.
3. In pairs, research the Cultural Revolution of 1966 (see attached newspaper article) and answer the following:
- What was the Cultural Revolution?
- What did it have to do with the failure of Mao's "Great Leap Forward"?
- What were the key aspects of the revolution? What class of society was it aimed at?
- What was intended by Mao Zedong? What did he hope to achieve?
In answering the questions, each group must analyse a propaganda poster (see attached) from the Cultural Revolution and apply the Context, Content and Function analysis to it. This will assist in answering the above questions. Use the BBC website for information on aspects of the posters that you are unsure of.
