Inagine this scenario at school: No choice of electives. Assigned uniform, stationery. No say in school rules? Consequences for breaking these rules: torture, isolation, exiled.

Write a paragraph explaining how you would feel- send it to your teacher.

Set up a school analogy for students to pretend they are at a school where: you have no say. No choice of electives. Assigned uniform, stationery. No say in school rules? Consequences for breaking these rules: torture, isolation, exiled.

Write down how would you feel- the class will do a think, pair, share activity.

ACTIVITY TWO: DICTATOR FOR THE LESSON

Ask who wants to take over the class. The first hand that goes up (teacher discretion) is the new dictator. Link that to how dictators come to power  by overthrowing the government in charge.

New dictator is give 10 minutes to plan their lesson

INSTRUCTIONS (EMAIL THESE TO STUDENT CHOSEN)

You are to be the leader of the class for the lesson and your role is to be a coach, teacher or any other person in a position of power/leadership. eg. coach of basketball or football team, principle of the school etc.

Your task is to instruct your class on what you want from them.

Points you need to think about are:

  • who are you going to be?
  • what are you going to be instructing your audience to do?
  • you must set rules
  • There must be consequences
  • how are you convincing your audience to be on your side (persuasive language, propaganda)

Ask the rest of the class to think about the following when the student comes back to the room

  • what are the differences between the new person who rules the class to your old teacher?
  • how did it make you feel to be under this new system?

What causes a dictatorship? Discussion. Mention that it starts as an ideal and turns into a quest for power, could use example of Pol Pot in Cambodia.
