Chapter 15 STARTER QUESTIONS (OPTIONAL)
1. Why does Frankie aim to avoid Megan Johnson even though he likes her?

3. Can you imagine why this is such a dangerous thing to do considering the plague and how it is carried? Use your knowledge of the plague to answer this question.
4. p123 The baby rats are born. Why is Frankie excited about getting 'six shillings'? p 124.
5. In 1900 sterling currency was used – try to find out how much six shillings would buy. What would it be worth today if it kept its value?
To assist you, about forty years ago you could go to the movies for 1 shilling and 6 pence or 6 pennies. This is equal to 16 cents. Imagine how much more it would be worth in 1900!
6. Go back to p 111 - have you heard of the diseases mentioned in the novel? : 'Tuberculosis, typhoid, diphtheria, whooping cough and pneumonia'.
7. Also consider that the mothers in each home in Sydney in 1900 took an active role in trying to save their family, '...it was my ma who captained the team..with the arrival of the plague, mothers everywhere rolled up their sleeves and went about the business of protecting their families'. p 110

1. Read the resource below and take important notes on how medical research made such a difference to people in 1900. Compare with the 14th Century; why were people in 1900 so lucky in comparison?

This should include important dates, medical findings, scientists.

Create two timelines that focuses on the medical and scientific research that was found during the 14th century plague and during the 1900's plague epidemic.
One timeline should focus on the 14th Century plague and the second timeline the 1900's bubonic plague.
You will using the research that you recorded in order to develop your timelines.

When looking at both plot graphs. Please write a paragraph explaining why in the 1900's there were as increased in survival rather than in the 14th Century. How far did science progress and which individuals were responsible.
