Briefly write what you know about the plague from your understanding in our study of the plague in the 14th Century.

How did it spread?

What different types of plague were there?

Why did it decimate the population in the 14th Century?

Why don't we suffer from the plague in Australia today?

Research the following :

when were antibiotics first used in Australia?

why was this such a breakthrough?

why was polio such an awful disease and how was it 'cured'?

have you heard of 'scarlet fever'? Why don't we have this disease now?

why is immunisation so important?

does all this mean that we should always support medical/scientific research?

Chapter 15 STARTER QUESTIONS (OPTIONAL)

1. Why does Frankie aim to avoid Megan Johnson even though he likes her?

2. What does Frankie have to give to his sister Maggie? p 120 -122

3. Can you imagine why this is such a dangerous thing to do considering the plague and how it is carried? Use your knowledge of the plague to answer this question.

4. p123 The baby rats are born. Why is Frankie excited about getting 'six shillings'? p 124.

To assist you, about forty years ago you could go to the movies for 1 shilling and 6 pence or 6 pennies. This is equal to 16 cents. Imagine how much more it would be worth in 1900!

MEDICAL and SCIENTIFIC research  ACTIVITY 1

1.  Read the resource below and take important notes on how medical research made such a difference to people in 1900. Compare with the 14th Century; why were people in 1900 so lucky in comparison?

ACTIVITY 3

Create two timelines that focuses on  the medical and scientific research that was found during the 14th century plague and during the 1900's plague epidemic.

One timeline should focus on the 14th Century plague and the second timeline the 1900's bubonic plague.

You will using the research that you recorded in order to develop your timelines.

ACTIVITY 4

When looking at both plot graphs. Please write a paragraph explaining why in the 1900's there were as increased in survival rather than in the 14th Century. How far did science progress and which individuals were responsible.
