STUDENT ACTIVITY 1 FILM VIEWING

If you have a copy of the film continue viewing and write notes about how characters change and key incidents that demonstrate change from disunity to unity and strength.

For example how does the conflict between Coach Boone and Coach Yoast change?

Julius and Gerry? Consider the hospital scene if you have seen it or are up to it in your film viewing.

Other???

STUDENT ACTIVITY 2

PERSUASIVE LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Persuasive language through film study

Complete a point of view using persuasive language to convince your audience.

Students need to comprehend and respond critically to the content of films.

TASK. write a persuasive point of view from the perspective of a witness to one of the racist events in the film. You are not a character who already exists in the film. You may create a character but this must be believable. Demonstrate some knowledge of the civil rights movement and you must know the film so that your letter makes sense.

See samples in resources but only use them for ideas. Create your own original idea.

Error in the creative sample - date should be 1972, not 1872.

What other incidents could you write about? Apart from the parent protest, what about the racist attitudes to the Titans at the football game? You may be a spectator. What else could you write about? Coach Boone's home being attacked?

Choose an interesting idea.

Student Activity 1

Persuasive Writing

You may write your letter to the editor in this class - consider the two examples you have been given in a previous learning bite :

- one was a persuasive letter to be published and one was a personal letter - both were persuasive.

See assessment criteria in 'evidence of learning'.

If students finish this early (but this must be your best effort) you may be directed to ACTIVITY 2 below.

STUDENT ACTIVITY 2 FILM VIEWING

Write notes about how characters change and key incidents that demonstrate change from disunity to unity and strength.

Ask your teacher to stop the film so that you can discuss your ideas or pause so you have time to write.

For example how and when does the conflict between Coach Boone and Coach Yoast change?

Julius and Gerry? Consider the hospital scene if you have seen it or are up to it in your film viewing.

Other???
