35 minutes PREPARATION for informative writing - what do you remember?

The Vikings

The Vikings were tribes of seafaring people from a region in the north of Europe (now known as Scandinavia). They raided, traded, explored and settled regions across Europe and Asia from the late 6th century.

1. Students will use the text 'Oxford Big Ideas History 8' and any class notes and emails to revise any material on the Vikings. You may refer to learning bites during this time if you wish.

2. Consider how much information you can and need to write in 40 minutes

3. How will you begin the informative passage? Will you include a heading?

4. How will you end this?

5. Informative writing means you write to inform so you need to know your subject and be engaging in your use of language.

This may help you sort out your ideas and organise what you want to write :

Consider when the Viking era began and ended.

Where did they live?

Did they travel far from home? Why?

What were their skills?

What do you admire most about them?

Were they barbarians or did the time they lived in and their world view have something to do with their views and values?

How were women treated?

What were their beliefs?

Any other information you are interested in, for more independent students, you may choose to compare the Vikings with another society that existed before contemporary times.

Briefly sum up how the Vikings changed the way people lived. Include their maritime skills and adventurous spirit.

Writing

Are you writing as an historian for a student magazine? You may include images if you want to but the written section must aim for 200 words minimum length.

What is your purpose, who is your audience?

What interesting vocabulary are you going to use?

ZINE

Students who are ready to complete the informative writing at the beginning of the class may then begin their graphic story or ZINE - SEE the next Learning Bite for this.
