1. Students who want to challenge themselves or be independent will find their own text to use as their supplementary.

This can be a song, poem, novel, film or article,

2. The Paradox of Belonging

What is a paradox?

Identity cannot be altogether isolated from an accompanying context. What surrounds us influences identity. We come to a knowledge of identity through a series of interactions - with family, peers, strangers and friends. Also through those we do not accept for a variety of reasons. Through the process of learning where we belong and where we do not, we refine a sense of who we are. Total independence is neither posssible, nor, for most, desirable.

Since belonging is inescapably built into identity, it is up to each individual to negotiate the complex and continually shifting balance between personal needs and the demands of the group. Such is the paradox of belonging.

Making sense of this :

To what extent do we gain by wanting to belong and feeling accepted by others?

To what extent do we sacrifice too much and therefore lose our sense of self?

Student task

Consider Jamilah in the text Ten Things I Hate About Me. What does she feel she has lost by dying her hair and denying her cultural background?

Why does she envy Timothy?

Read the extract : 'Ten Things I Hate About Me' Randa Abdel-Fattah

Focus on the narrator Jamilah (Jamie) and Timothy a character she admires.

Construct character profiles and contrast them.

Questions to help -

Why does Jamilah want to change herself?

Why is Timothy seemingly able to be himself and not worry about what others think of him?

DISCUSSION

Does our appearance make it hard for us to belong?

Is Australia a multicultural and tolerant society?

Comment on the following :

Does our appearance make it hard for us to belong? If not for you, for whom might this be true?

Do some people try to look different and stand out?

Is Australia a multicultural and tolerant society?
