The following novels and movies give an insight into the lives and treatment of  theJewish people living in Germany during  World War 2.

Suggested books to read include:

  • Night by Elie Weisel
  • The Diary of Anne Frank
  • Once, Then or Now by Morris Gleitzman
  • Maus - a graphic novel by Art Speigelman

Suggested movies to watch:

  • The Boy in Striped Pyjamas
  • The Pianist
  • Schindler's list (but you will need parent permission)

Extend your knowledge about the Holocaust. Find out what you can about the concentration camps. Where were they, how did they operate, who ran them, were Jewish people tricked into thinking they were going to a camp?

Activity 3

You are being presented with a document (see attachment below) which has two titles.

One is on page one 'Jews in Nazi Germany 1933 - 1939' with the other on page three titled  'Treatment of Jews'.

You are expected to read through all the document and address the questions that follow each.

When you have completed this you are to use all the information you have read on this topic 'The Holocaust' to write:

  • a newspaper report on the Holocaust with the tilte 'The biggest mass murder of all time'

                                                or

  • a creative piece of writing -  e.g story (Fiction or non fiction) poem

                                                or

  • an information booklet  

                                                or

  • any other piece of writing. You will need to discuss this with your teacher.

GRAPHIC NOVEL - MAUS by Art Speigelman - see resources below that have samples from his book - Jewish people were represented as mice, the Nazi guards as cats. This text is on the Year 12 English list.

There are copies in D1 which you may borrow but ONLY during class time. You need to sign the sheet when you borrow a copy and return the text at the end of the day.

All students should attempt to read at least one novel that relates to the Holocaust.
