1. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmgzD5hzMz8 This is a simple visual film on our first impressions of Vikings

They are described as pirates, but 'cooler'.

TASK 1 FIRST IMPRESSIONS AND VOCABULARY

Jot down your first impressions - use interesting vocabulary if you can.  What have you learned about the Vikings from this visual extract?

TASK 2 Discussion, thinking and research  - the VIKINGS

Use text Oxford Big Ideas Year 8

Focus on the following :

1. The time of the Vikings - where are they in our historical past? p 64-5

2. How was Viking society organised? p 66-7

3. What were some of their social roles? p 67-8

4. Does it surprise you that Viking women were usually independent people? (you will find the answer to this on p 67)

5. What are Jarls, Karls and Thralls? SEE Vocabulary at beginning of this learning bite.

.

Barbarians or adventurers?

This is a question we will answer as we read material about Vikings in the next learning bite.

p 72 Mention the word Viking to most people and they will imagine hordes of bloodied warriors causing havoc wherever they go and striking fear into innocent villagers. They were fierce warriors.

But this is only part of the story...

REFLECTION :

How will our society be regarded in a hundred years or more? As civilised or barbaric?

Write your opinion - what do you think? To support your view, provide examples.
