Graphic stories come in many forms - have you heard of ZINES?
Successful ZINES :
- understand the communication process
- recognise the purpose of the communication
- know what they want to say
- understand the characteristics of the media used to communicate
- can identify their audience
RESEARCH ZINES and consider how you could use these for a topic in our study of the 'VIKINGS'.
For example - the vikings were not barbarian but they were survivors - agree or disagree?
Make your ZINE so that you explore your feelings and communicate them creatively.

Step one
Decide the focus of your graphic story
specific - Viking long boats
general - Viking adventurers
Example for a ZINE :
VIKING ADVENTURERS (COVER PAGE)
IMPORTANCE OF THE SUN STONE (1)
THE LONG BOAT (2)
CROSSING THE ATLANTIC : THOR (3)
ATTACKING LINDISFARNE IN 793 (4)
FOR 300 YEARS THE VIKINGS RULED (5) (HAVE A MAP)What will you have next?
Step two
Will you hand draw the images?
Will you copy and paste from the internet?
Will you use pictures in our references books as your inspiration?
What is the purpose of your ZINE or graphic story?
Some students prepare by creating a power point to use as the basis of their story presentation
Some students love writing and this will be the focus with some carefully selected images
Step three
Ideas we have discussed in class :
Some students are focussing on Viking gods and mythology.
Some students are creating a story in which a Viking finds him or herself in the 21st century. This could be very interesting...
If you do not want to draw you may copy pictures from another source such as a reference book or the internet.
Some students want to write in lots of detail, others want a visual focus.
Using a power point as preparation :
some students create a power point first then use this to transfer to a graphic novel.
Final step - share your ideas with a friend or family.
Next class complete the ZINE.
