1. Read Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll.

2. What is the poem about - despite the language can you understand the story? What is the warning for the boy? What has happened to make the poem a happy one?

3. What kind of creature might the Jabberwocky be? Can you tell by the description in the poem? Perhaps you can illustrate it.

4. Change the 'nonsense' words so they make sense to you. Make sure if they are verbs, they are still verbs when you change the words. Same for nouns and adverbs.

* Students who wish to challenge themselves will change the bold 'nonsense' words without assistance and demonstrate they are able to use interesting vocabulary.

Find other 'nonsense' poems -

Spike Milligan for example : On the Ning Nong Nang

On the Ning Nang Nong
Where the Cows go Bong!
and the monkeys all say BOO!
There's a Nong Nang Ning
Where the trees go Ping!
And the tea pots jibber jabber joo.
On the Nong Ning Nang
All the mice go Clang
And you just can't catch 'em when they do!
So its Ning Nang Nong
Cows go Bong!
Nong Nang Ning
Trees go ping
Nong Ning Nang
The mice go Clang
What a noisy place to belong
is the Ning Nang Ning Nang Nong!!

Also if you know Shakespeare's Hamlet, you will find Milligan's poem funny and clever, titled :

Silly Poem

Said Hamlet to Ophelia,
I'll draw a sketch of thee,
What kind of pencil shall I use?
2B or not 2B?
