CREATIVE WRITING

First Lines

The first line of a short story is very important, a good one can hook the reader and make them want to read on. A weak first line and they might pass your story by.

TASK - Create a paragraph for the following lines:

How are you going to begin your paragraph?

Will you begin with setting or character description or action, for example ?

Will you include dialogue or leave that to later?

CHOOSE at least three of the following :

The plains were deserted of life.

Fierce waves burst, white and frothy as they collided with the ferry, rocking it back and forth.

I remember pain.

He was often dreaming, litle Timmy.

She stood in the centre of a room bleached of all colour by moonlight.

I placed the key in the lock, opened the front door and bolted upstairs.

In darkness I wait.

The butter was a soft golden cube that slid into the mixing bowl and smeared its sides.

'What time do you call this?'

The snake stretches out across the sunburnt road.

May 5th 1973.

Dust finds a way into all the gaps and crevices , fils the cabin with a dry humidity that burns my nostrils and sticks in my throat.

____________________________________________________________________________

Choose your favourite opening paragraph.

What could happen next in the story and how might it end?

Student ACTIVITY

Create one-liners for other students. Make sure your one-liners inspire other students to write. Remember it may be in one of the following styles or genres.

Science fiction

Romance

War

Horror

Mystery

Adventure

Tragedy

Comedy

You may find you are combining more than one literary genre or style in your one liner but make it as clear as you can which genre you are introducing in your one-liner short story openings.
