Discuss what themes other than 'friendship' are present. students to identify other themes that may be evident in the novel. brainstorm on the board.
Ask students to consider the following:
-the way characters behave (what they say and do) helps the author to explore and comment on themes
-the way the plot is constructed (what happens in the story) also helps to explore and comment on themes
For example, the fact that Walid and Adam become friends and survive war allows Mason to make the point that friendship survives war.

Give students themes table (ATTACHED) and have them work in small groups to fill it out
When filling in your table, rather than just slotting in examples of the theme being explored, try to make some analytical statements like the ones above.
