Students would have read the Camel Rider in full so that they will have knowledge and characters and their relationship from this.

Draw up a table of similarities and differences between Adam and Walid (some students will have started this already for homework, but read on for info on how you can continue it)

Read the chapters where Adam and Walid first meet each other again (Ch 8,9,10)and record similarities and differences between them, using quotes where necessary.

You will notice there are many more differences than similarities, yet as you know Adam and Walid become true friends.

Consider this idea: Prue Mason shows in Camel Rider that people don’t need to be from the same place and have the same interests to become friends.

What do they need through? Write a few sentances that explain what you think people need to share to become friends, using Adam and Walid as examples

Hold a classroom discussion on the following topic: what makes a true friend. Have a student record responses on a flow chart on the board.

Classroom Activity C

What did you notice when doing the table (the answer should be that there were more differences than similarities)

Write this statement on board: Mason shows in Camel Rider that people don’t need to be from the same place and have the same interests to become friends.

Students to discuss in pairs or small groups the following

1) Do you agree or disagree. Why or why not? (Evidence will be required from text to support answer)

2) What does Mason show IS needed for a true friendship (evidence required)

Discuss group responses as a whole class.
