This activity can be completed using chess pawns and unifix blocks.

Each group of students needs a copy of the instructions and examples and a set of 2 different colours of pawns (the pronumerals) and unifix blocks for the numbers.

Roles for each group members

1) Setup - one student sets up the equation on the balance

2) Operator - adds and subtracts same things from each side

3) Recorder - records the operator actions to show what has been done

4) Checker - substitutes answer into original equation to check solutions.

Rotate each role through the duration of the activity and students will understand the ideas of each role.
