Why Study History?

Watch the Youtube Clip below, and think about the following discussion questions:

What is History?

Why do we study it?

What might be some consequences if humans never studied the past?

What kinds of things can we use as evidence for what happened in the past?

Write your answers down and discuss them with a partner

Your Personal History in a Time Capsule

Read through the Time Capsule task (can be read together as a class - teachers can also email PPT to students), and start thinking about the kinds of artefacts that you will bring. You can discuss ideas with a friend.

During this class you may be able to begin the first draft of your written written component.

Evidence of your life:

Throughout our lives we collect evidence of how we live. Anything you own or know of that tells something about yourself is a piece of historical evidence – it is a primary resource. Find at least two artefacts from home that give information into your life or the life of a family member (eg photo, trophy, letter, painting, certificate, artwork, coins, etc). Bring them to our next class so that we can discuss it together as a group.

students can then write biographies of each other (in pairs) based on the information they gain from the sources that have been brought in
