What Do You Know?
Students are encouraged to write down everything they know about tobacco/cigarettes/smoking/nicotine for five minutes. It can be dot points, list style, mind map or paragraph form. They share this information with a partner and then collaborate to update their initial list. The teacher asks for a volunteer pair to share their information with the whole class with one student writing this information on the whiteboard in a mind map style. The teacher calls on pairs sequentially and encourages the class to update their own list every time new information is placed on the whiteboard.

My Advice Letter:

Scenario: Write the following fact: ’50 Australians die everyday as a result of smoking related illness'.  Perhaps one teenager in Australia somewhere right now is about to buy their first packet of cigarettes. What advice would you give them. Write down some sound advice for this person citing 3 facts from www.oxyGen.org.au

Include an introduction, body (3 facts) and conclusion. Use Microsoft word. When you have finished share your advice with some of your peers. Exchange thoughts and ideas and finally explore www.oxyGen.org.au for further knowledge regarding the harmful effects of cigarette smoking
