If English is not your first language, you can first read a website about how to wash clothes in a website in your own language before you attempt the Anytime Anywhere Activities.  Don't forget to ask someone if you are unclear and also to record new vocabulary in your Vocabulary Book.

If you think you understand how to wash your clothes and what the care labels mean, test yourself by:

  • making a list of all the clothes that are part of your school uniform
  • sort each item of clothing into categories eg. dry clean only, machine wash or hand wash
  • decide which ones can be dried in a clothes dryer
  • decide which ones need to be ironed when dry

Do the same test on the clothes you would usually wear on the weekend.

Then give the information to a parent or other adult for checking.

You've probably seen images of women in India slapping clothing against rocks on the side of a river to get them clean.  Or maybe African people washing clothes in parasite-infected waterholes.  Just how do people in other countries keep their clothes clean?  Do some research into laundering around the world.

How did people do their laundry in years gone by?  Do some research into the way people washed their clothing in the past.

When was the washing machine invented?  Draw a timeline tracing the development and marketing of this time-saving device and of other laundry equipment such as clothes dryers, irons and detergents.
