Reason For Learning

The health of Australia's youth is generally good, and improvements are continually being made in most areas. An understanding of the concept of health is important if the health of our young people is to be adequately analysed and evaluated.

Learning Intention

• definitions of health and the limitations of these definitions; • characteristics of, and interrelationships between, physical, social and mental dimensions of health; • measurements of health status, including life expectancy, incidence, prevalence, trends, morbidity, mortality, disability adjusted life years (DALYs) and burden of disease; • the health status of Australia’s youth; • biological determinants of health and individual human development of Australia’s youth, including genetics, body weight and hormonal changes; • the interrelationships between health and individual human development during the lifespan stage of youth;
