Unit 4 - Exo & Endothermic reactions, Delta H values, energy profile diagrams

Reason For Learning

To examine the factors that influence the rate of reactions and the changes in energy that occur during chemical reactions.

Learning Intention

After completing this learning bite you should be able to; Describe the energy changes occurring during a chemical reaction in terms of breaking and forming chemical bonds. Compare the relative amounts of energy involved in breaking and bond formation in both endothermic and exothermic reactions. Use Delta H values to identify reactions as exo or endothermic. Write thermochemical equations for a reaction, including the appropriate value for Delta H Sketch and interpret energy profile diagrams. Describe chemical reactions in terms of collision theory of particles. Provide explanations for the increase in reaction rate that occurs when the solute concentration is increased, particle size of solid reactants is decreased, temperature is increased and catalyst is added.
