Unit 2 - AOS 1- Corrosion - A redox issue

Reason For Learning

Examples of corrosion are many and diverse. For example, the blackening of silver, greening of copper, the build up on the leads of a car battery. A more important and familiar example is the rusting of the iron and steel structures around us. This is a huge problem and cost to the community. We need to what type of conditions are required for rusting to occur and then suggest as many ways possible of preventing it.

Learning Intention

After doing this learning bite you will: Know how rusting occurs and how it adversely affects the properties of iron. Learn about and remember that the 3 main ways of corrosion protection are surface protection, alloying and electrochemical protection.
