Unit 2 - AOS 1- Neutralisation, conjugate pairs, pH scale

Reason For Learning

Acids will react with bases to form water and compounds with the general name "salts". The reaction is called neutralisation. Many natural materials have different colours depending on wether they are in acidic or basic solutions. These dyes are called indicators. You can make one in the lab by warming red cabbage leaves with water and some methylated spirits. The pH scale and universal indicator will be investigated as a means of determining acid/base strength.

Learning Intention

After completing this learning bite you will be familiar with acid/base theory and how they undergo neutralisation reactions. You will also be given the opportunity to conduct a titration and an indicator extraction.
