Unit 1 - Polymers , thermoplastic/thermosetting

Reason For Learning

In this learning bite you will study the polymerisation process by which complex organic molecules , called polymers , may be formed from simpler molecules called monomers. Polymers , including plastics, are a wide range of substances, both natural and synthetic.

Learning Intention

After completing this learning bite you will: Examine the relationship between the structure and bonding of polymer materials and their properties and uses. Know the difference between thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers and how their different structures affects their elasticity. Learn about addition and condensation polymerisation. Recognise the structure of high density polyethene (HDPE) ,and low density polyethene (LDPE) and know about their properties and recycling.
