Unit 1 - Empirical & Molecular Formulae

Reason For Learning

The Empirical formula of a compound is the simplest whole number ratio of atoms or ions that are present in a compound. Empirical formulas can be calculated from percentage compositions or molecular formulae. The molecular formula of a compound is the actual number of atoms that are present in a molecule of that substance. It can be equal to the empirical formula, or it can be a whole number multiple of the empirical formula.
