Unit 1 - Covalent Bonding

Reason For Learning

This bite deals with the formation and naming of molecules, outlines the attractive forces between molecules in the formation of solids and explores the relationship between bonding within and between molecules to explain their properties.

Learning Intention

At the end of this learning bite you will be able to; understand and recognise covalent bonding as the strong bonding that exists within molecules such as hydrogen, oxygen and water. examine the relationship between structure and bonding of covalent materials and their properties. Recognise and remember the names and shapes of molecules with up to four electron pairs around a central atom. know about weak dispersion forces and permanent dipole to dipole interactions including hydrogen bonding. learn about the covalent bonding found in lattices such as diamond and graphite.
